Brazil elections reshape Congress with 35% renewal rate
The recent Brazilian elections have significantly reshaped the composition of the National Congress for the 2027 legislature. Data from the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) and legislative bodies indicate a 35.67% renewal rate in the Chamber of Deputies, with 183 members set to serve their first terms.
Demographic shifts show mixed results. While female representation saw increases—with 109 women elected to the Chamber and 12 to the Senate—the Black and mixed-race (pardo) caucus saw a slight decline, falling to 135 seats (26.3% of the Chamber). Indigenous representation also decreased from five to three deputies.
The political landscape also shows a rise in local political experience at the federal level. According to the National Front of Mayors, 96 former mayors were elected to Congress, an 88% increase compared to 2022. The Liberal Party (PL) emerged as a major force in the Chamber, securing 121 seats.
In terms of turnover, the first round of voting resulted in the loss of mandates for 168 federal deputies and 21 senators. The new Chamber will be predominantly white, with 72.9% of members identifying as such.
