Brazil elections threaten 40 billion euros in Spanish corporate exposure

The upcoming Brazilian elections on October 4, featuring a contest between incumbent Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro, pose significant financial risks to Spanish companies. Major Ibex 35 firms, including Santander, Telefónica, Iberdrola, Naturgy, Mapfre, and Indra, have a combined exposure in Brazil exceeding 40 billion euros.

Analysts view the election as a referendum on Brazil's fiscal trajectory. A victory for Lula da Silva is associated with increased public spending and higher deficits, potentially pressuring bond markets. Conversely, a Bolsonaro victory is linked to budgetary restraint.

Currency fluctuations are a primary concern for investors. Goldman Sachs anticipates significant volatility in the Brazilian real; a market-unfriendly outcome could see the exchange rate reach 5.8 reals per dollar, while a credible adjustment plan could strengthen the currency to between 4.3 and 4.8 reals per dollar. Such shifts directly impact the euro-denominated earnings of Spanish corporations, such as Santander, which derives 21% of its operating profit from the Brazilian market.
