Brazil electoral system and democratic processes

The Brazilian electoral system is characterized by direct and frequent elections, which serve as a cornerstone of the nation's democracy. Under the 1988 Federal Constitution, certain positions require a second round of voting if no candidate achieves an absolute majority (50% plus one of the valid votes, excluding blank and null votes).

This second-round mechanism applies to the election of the President and Vice-President, Governors, and Mayors of municipalities with more than 200,000 voters. In contrast, Senators, Federal and State Deputies, and Mayors of smaller municipalities are elected in a single round.

Political parties play a vital role in this process by interpreting civil society's aspirations and facilitating public participation. While political competition can lead to polarization, the democratic exercise requires a commitment to the common good and respect for human dignity, ensuring that governance serves all citizens regardless of election outcomes.
