Brazil electricity bills set to rise 8.6% in 2026

The Brazilian electricity regulator Aneel projects an average 8.6% tariff increase for 2026, surpassing inflation estimates of 4.9% (IPCA) and 5.8% (IGP‑M). The rise is linked to the yellow tariff flag in effect since April, reflecting less favorable generation conditions during the dry season and greater reliance on costlier thermal plants. The higher cost will affect both households and companies, prompting interest in alternatives such as energy‑efficiency measures, distributed generation and smart consumption management. Marcelo Freitas, CEO of Soul, emphasized that the issue is not merely “how to consume less energy?” but “how to reduce the exposure of families and companies to an essential cost about which they have historically had little decision power.”

Since 2020 Brazil also offers a time‑of‑use option called Tarifa Branca, which charges three different rates depending on the hour of consumption – peak, intermediate and off‑peak. Consumers who shift usage to lower‑cost periods can save up to 15‑20% on their electricity bills, although those with high demand during peak hours may pay more. The scheme targets residential, commercial and agricultural users who can adjust their consumption patterns.
