Brazil electricity tariffs decrease in North and Northeast regions

The Brazilian government has implemented electricity tariff reductions for five distributors in the North and Northeast regions, following authorization from the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel). This reduction is facilitated by Law 15.235 of 2025, which allows hydroelectric plants to pay for the use of public riverbeds at a 50% discount, with those savings passed on to consumers.

Beneficiaries include distributors in Rondônia, Ceará, Acre, Sergipe, and Tocantins, with residential bills seeing decreases of up to 10.63%. Aneel has transferred R$ 5.48 billion to the benefiting distributors, with Neoenergia Coelba in Bahia receiving the largest share at R$ 697.1 million.

In contrast, regions in the South and Southeast are not eligible for these specific reductions under current law, as the benefit is restricted to areas under the jurisdiction of the Superintendency for the Development of the Amazon and the Superintendency for the Development of the Northeast. Consequently, consumers in Santa Catarina have seen average increases, with residential and rural bills rising by 9.26% and industrial bills by 14.16%.
