Brazil electricity tariffs face hikes amid TCU fund freeze

Electricity consumers in Brazil face potential price increases following regulatory and judicial developments. In Santa Catarina, the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) announced an average tariff adjustment of 10.82% for Celesc customers, effective August 22. Group B consumers, including residences and small businesses, will see a 9.26% increase, while Group A industrial clients will face a 14.16% hike.

Simultaneously, a decision by Antonio Anastasia, a minister at the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU), has blocked R$ 5.02 billion intended to lower electricity bills for 22 distributors, primarily in the North and Northeast regions. The funds, derived from debt renegotiations regarding the use of public lands by hydroelectric generators, were blocked because they were not registered in the General Union Budget. This freeze prevents the planned tariff reductions for consumers in Sudam and Sudene areas, potentially leading to higher inflationary pressure and higher electricity revisions.
