Brazil electricity bills to return to green tariff flag in October

Brazil's National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) has announced that electricity bills will return to the green tariff flag in October. This change means consumers will not face additional charges on their monthly bills.

The transition to the green flag follows five consecutive months of the yellow tariff flag, which imposed an extra cost of R$ 1.885 per 100 kWh consumed. According to Aneel and Minister of Mines and Energy Alexandre Silveira, the shift is due to increased rainfall volumes, particularly in the South and Southeast regions, which has stabilized hydroelectric reservoir levels.

Improved reservoir conditions allow for a reduction in the use of more expensive energy sources, such as fuel-based thermoelectric plants. The tariff flag system, established in 2015, is used to signal the variable costs of electricity generation within the National Interconnected System (SIN).
