Brazil promulgates constitutional amendment to end 6x1 work schedule

The Brazilian National Congress has promulgated Constitutional Amendment 141/2026, officially ending the 6x1 work schedule. This reform mandates a transition from a 44-hour maximum work week to a 40-hour maximum work week, while guaranteeing two paid days of rest per week without any reduction in salaries.

The implementation will follow a gradual timeline: the maximum weekly hours will decrease to 42 hours in December 2026, reaching the final 40-hour limit in December 2027. The movement to end the 6x1 schedule gained significant momentum through social mobilization, notably led by Rick Azevedo and the 'Vida Além do Trabalho' (VAT) movement.

Economic sectors are preparing for the impact. The restaurant industry, via Abrasel, estimates a 7% to 8% increase in menu prices, while the retail sector projects labor expenses could rise by 20% to 22%. In the agribusiness sector, companies like sugar and ethanol producers and meatpackers are expected to face higher operational costs. To mitigate these effects, the government is considering credit lines and innovation programs to assist businesses during the transition.
