Brazil enacts law regulating Pibid teaching scholarships
Law 15.518/2026 has been established to regulate the Institutional Program for Teaching Initiation Scholarships (Pibid). The program provides scholarships to undergraduate students in teaching degree programs to engage in training activities within public schools.
Managed by the Ministry of Education (MEC) and the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes), the program aims to improve the quality of initial teacher training and bridge the gap between higher education and basic education. Training activities will cover various educational stages and modalities, including rural, indigenous, quilombola, special, bilingual for the deaf, and adult education.
The law defines five scholarship categories: teaching initiation for students, supervision for public school teachers, area coordination, educational process management coordination, and institutional coordination. The total number of scholarships will depend on budget availability and Capes regulations. During the presidential sanction, the article regarding the specific funding sources for the program's expenses was vetoed.
