Brazil energy sector M&A falls 30% in first half of 2026
Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) in the Brazilian energy sector experienced a significant slowdown during the first half of 2026. The number of transactions fell by 30.3%, dropping from 66 operations in the same period of 2025 to 46.
The total value of these transactions decreased by 21%. While the volume of deals declined more sharply than the total capital moved, the data suggests a more selective market environment. Investors are exercising greater caution, focusing on asset pricing, expected returns, and cash flow generation.
High interest rates and elevated capital costs are cited as primary drivers for this trend. In a sector like energy, which requires heavy investment in generation, transmission, distribution, and renewables, the cost of financing significantly impacts the feasibility and attractiveness of new acquisitions.
