Brazil enforces diesel emission standards and toxicological testing

Brazilian traffic regulations mandate strict compliance regarding vehicle emissions and driver health screenings. Under CONTRAN Resolution No. 427, diesel engines in trucks and buses must be monitored using opacimeters to measure smoke density. Failure to comply with emission standards is classified as a serious infraction, resulting in a fine of R$ 195.23, five points on the driver's license, and vehicle retention.

Additionally, drivers holding C, D, and E category licenses are required to undergo periodic toxicological exams. Drivers under 70 years old must complete these tests every 30 months. Under Federal Law No. 14,599/2023, driving with an expired exam is a very serious infraction, carrying a fine of R$ 1,467.35 and a three-month license suspension. An automatic fine is also applied during license renewal if the exam has been expired for more than 30 days.
