Brazil establishes Federal University of Sport (UFESPORTE)

The sanction of Federal Law No. 15,457 on July 3, 2026, has officially established the Federal University of Sport (UFESPORTE) in Brazil. The institution is built upon the pillars of public higher education, including teaching, research, extension, innovation, and social transformation.

UFESPORTE aims to bridge the gap between scientific production and the daily realities of athletes, para-athletes, and sports entities nationwide. Its scope of work covers various stages of athletic development, from grassroots initiation to high performance and leisure, encompassing fields such as management, physiology, health, career transition, and inclusion.

Experts, including Fernando Marinho Mezzadri of the UFPR Institute of Sports Intelligence Research, note that while the creation is met with enthusiasm, significant practical challenges remain. A primary obstacle is breaking academic isolation to ensure scientific rigor meets the practical needs of the sports sector. Additionally, the university must align its guidelines with existing frameworks like the General Sports Law (Law No. 14,597/2023).
