Brazil establishes National School Environmental Education Policy

Brazil's Ministry of Education (MEC) has established the National School Environmental Education Policy (Pneae) through Ordinance No. 734. Announced during COP30 in Belém, the policy provides guidelines for basic education networks regarding environmental education and actions to prevent, adapt to, and mitigate the impacts of climate change.

The policy aims to integrate environmental education across school curricula and provide continuous training for educators and school communities. It focuses on addressing biodiversity loss and increasing awareness of risks and vulnerabilities related to socio-environmental disasters. Implementation is voluntary for education networks, with a specific focus on regions facing high climate and socio-environmental risks.

Operationalization will occur through six structural axes: Federative Coordination; Training; Recognition and Sharing of Knowledge; Popular Education and Climate Action; Prevention and Adaptation to Socio-environmental Risks; and Monitoring and Evaluation. An Executive Governance Network will be created to support school managers in implementing these guidelines.
