Brazil establishes new art education guidelines for basic schooling

The Brazilian National Council of Education (CNE) has published new guidelines for art education in basic education, spanning from early childhood to high school. Published in the Official Gazette, the resolution complements the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC) and establishes four specific curricular components: visual arts, dance, music, and theater.

The guidelines define art as a field of knowledge and mandate that teaching must go beyond the mere reproduction of techniques. Instead, activities should focus on creation, experimentation, appreciation, and critical reflection, including the analysis of historical, social, and cultural contexts. Schools are encouraged to organize a balanced workload, implementing two components per year to ensure learning continuity.

CNE President César Callegari emphasized that art should hold a permanent space in the educational process rather than being relegated to seasonal festivities. The guidelines suggest that artistic teaching can also integrate with other disciplines such as Portuguese, physics, and mathematics, contributing to the cognitive, affective, social, and aesthetic development of students.
