Brazil CNPE establishes task force for national electromobility strategy
The National Council for Energy Policy (CNPE) has approved the creation of a working group to develop a National Electromobility Strategy. Coordinated by the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), the group is tasked with providing technical data and guidelines to manage the rapid expansion of electric and hybrid vehicles in Brazil.
The task force has 120 days, with a possible extension for an equal period, to deliver a diagnostic report and strategic proposals. Key areas of focus include charging infrastructure, impacts on the national electrical system, the battery supply chain, environmental issues, and urban mobility. The group will also address the demand for critical minerals such as lithium, nickel, and graphite.
This initiative follows a significant surge in the electrified vehicle market. According to the Brazilian Electric Vehicle Association (ABVE), 381,600 light electric or hybrid vehicles were registered between January and September 2026, a nearly 70% increase compared to the total for the previous year. In September alone, electrified models accounted for 19.8% of light vehicle sales in the country.
