Brazil evaluates robotic surgery for rectal cancer treatment

Brazil's Ministry of Health has opened a public consultation to evaluate whether robotic-assisted surgery should be integrated into the Unified Health System (SUS) for patients with rectal cancer (stages I to III). This move addresses the technical difficulties of removing tumors located within the pelvis, where robotic technology offers surgeons improved precision, better angulation, and enhanced visualization. Medical literature suggests that robotic assistance may lead to lower local recurrence rates.

Colorectal cancer remains a significant health challenge in Brazil, ranking as the second most incident type of cancer among men and women, excluding non-melanoma skin cancer. The National Cancer Institute (INCA) estimates that the country will record more than 53,000 new cases of the disease during the 2026–2028 triennium.

In a related effort to advance cancer care, oncologists are emphasizing the importance of clinical research. Clinical studies serve as a primary method for developing and evaluating new treatments, offering opportunities for patients to access experimental protocols under strict safety guidelines.
