Brazil event sector drives massive economic activity and consumer debt

A study by Serasa, in partnership with Mapa dos Festivais and Instituto Opinion Box, reveals that one-third of music festival attendees in Brazil have incurred debt to participate in events, with many spending over R$ 1,000. While 83% of attendees claim to plan financially, the research suggests difficulty in estimating total costs. Expenses such as food and beverages (32%), lodging (18%), and transportation (13%) often outweigh the cost of the ticket itself (29%). Notably, 14% of respondents reported skipping basic bill payments to attend musical events.

Separately, data from the III Dimensionamento do Setor de Eventos no Brasil 2024/2025 study highlights the sector's economic scale. In 2024, the events industry in Brazil generated R$ 813.5 billion, with micro and small enterprises (MPEs) accounting for 75% of that revenue. The sector supported 12.7 million jobs and contributed R$ 133.9 billion in taxes. Projections suggest total revenue could exceed R$ 1.5 trillion by 2035, driven by demand for services including hospitality, security, technology, and tourism.
