Brazil Expands Autism Care Amid Diagnosis Delays

The 2022 Demographic Census recorded 2.4 million Brazilians with autism, about 1.2 % of the population, highlighting the need for policies based on accurate data. Families in states such as Mato Grosso report waiting months for a diagnosis and up to a year for specialist appointments, delaying early therapeutic interventions.

Enrollment of students with autism in special‑education programs rose from 5.6 % to 44.2 % between 2015 and 2024, but inclusion remains uneven without trained multidisciplinary staff. Adults with autism face high unemployment, with roughly 85 % outside the labour market, and many lack basic education.

A 2024 federal law created a national registry for neurodivergent conditions, aiming to improve service planning. In Rio de Janeiro, the Superintendence for Care of People with Autism (SUPCPTEA) coordinates the state care line, offers technical guidelines, and runs training for health professionals. It oversees diagnostic centres – CedTEA for children and adolescents and CedTEA 18+ for adults – and ensures SUS‑guaranteed health rights for people on the spectrum.
