Brazil advances organ transplant effort and June Red blood‑donation law

A heart recovered in Mossoró was flown to Natal for emergency transplant into a 67‑year‑old patient, the only person on the Rio Grande do Norte public‑health waiting list. The operation, coordinated by the state transplant center and supported by the Potiguar 02 helicopter, was part of the third organ‑capture effort of 2026 that also provided a liver, two kidneys and corneas for other recipients.

At the same time, Brazil’s Federal Senate moved forward with legislation to designate June as “June Red,” a month devoted to nationwide blood‑donation campaigns. The Social Affairs Committee approved the measure, sending it to the president for sanction. The bill calls for public education, events and the illumination of government buildings in red during June.

Across the country, numerous blood‑donation drives are underway. The Ceará blood centre sent 100 O‑positive bags to Hemonorte in Rio Grande do Norte to alleviate shortages. A mobile collection unit operated at Grand Shopping in Fortaleza, while a campaign in Capivari is scheduled for 15 August. The Santa Catarina hemocentre (Hemosc) issued an urgent appeal for donors of types A‑negative, O‑positive and O‑negative. These coordinated actions reflect a broad effort to strengthen Brazil’s blood‑supply and organ‑donation system.
