Brazil expands community‑based mental health care and crisis‑support outreach
New approaches to mental health in Brazil are moving away from long‑term institutionalization toward community‑focused, rights‑based care. Emphasising participation, social inclusion and interdisciplinary support, these models align with World Health Organization guidance that mental health is shaped by social determinants such as housing, work and education.
In São Paulo, the volunteer‑run "Stop Depression" initiative exemplifies this shift. Over a 1‑hour‑40‑minute drive‑through and blitz event, 40 volunteers reached about 700 participants, offering listening, guidance and referrals to an emotional‑support centre. One participant who was contemplating suicide was successfully redirected to professional help, illustrating the potential of low‑threshold community outreach to prevent crises.
