Brazil expands free access to national cinema via Tela Brasil platform and 2026 ticket program

The Ministry of Culture launched the free streaming service Tela Brasil on May 30, offering a catalog that includes 267 short films, 139 feature‑length films, 85 medium‑length works and 64 series produced between 1910 and 2025. The library features 19 titles that have represented Brazil at the Oscars and more than 300 works with audio description, descriptive subtitles and sign‑language translation. An agreement with TV Brasil will gradually integrate over 150 titles from the broadcaster’s archive into the platform.

Separately, the government announced a program slated for 2026 that will provide free or subsidized cinema tickets to broaden public attendance at theatres. The initiative aims to democratise cinema access, stimulate demand for Brazilian productions, strengthen the cultural sector and generate economic benefits for producers, distributors and exhibitors. Eligible participants are expected to include students, low‑income families, seniors and other groups, reflecting a broader strategy to counter the competition from streaming platforms and revive cinema attendance.

Both measures are part of a wider policy effort to increase the visibility of national audiovisual content, promote social inclusion through culture and support the domestic film industry.
