Brazil expands DNA-HPV molecular testing through SUS
Brazil is implementing a new DNA-HPV molecular testing protocol through the Unified Health System (SUS) to improve the early detection of cervical cancer. The technology identifies the presence of the human papillomavirus, including high-risk types 16 and 18, before lesions develop. This method allows for a longer screening interval of five years for patients with negative results.
Currently, 26 Brazilian states have adopted the new protocol. National data shows that between 2025 and 2026, 153,000 samples were collected, with 93,000 processed in 2026. Of those processed, 9,904 tested positive for high-risk HPV. While the transition is underway, the traditional Papanicolaou test remains available in the public health network.
A study by Unicamp in Indaiatuba, São Paulo, demonstrated that DNA-HPV testing can advance cancer detection by approximately 10 years, reducing the average screening age from 49.3 to 39.6 years. The National Cancer Institute (Inca) projects that Brazil could see up to 19,300 new cervical cancer cases annually by 2028.
