Brazil expands mental health services with new CAPS in Salvador and milestone anniversary in Monteiro

The municipality of Salvador is preparing to inaugurate a new Center for Psychosocial Care (CAPS) in the Mané Dendê neighborhood. The facility is part of the city’s largest urban‑requalification program, which includes a terminal, retail spaces and extensive infrastructure works. With 87% of the works completed and financing from the Inter‑American Development Bank, the CAPS is expected to open in the second half of the year and will serve roughly 10,000 residents directly and about 35,000 indirectly.

In Monteiro, the CAPS I marked its 19th anniversary, celebrating nearly two decades of community‑based mental‑health care. The center, the municipality’s first mental‑health service, offers clinical treatment, therapeutic activities and strong family involvement, aiming to promote health, citizenship and social inclusion for people with severe mental disorders.
