Brazil expands Pneumo 20 vaccine access for elderly citizens
Municipalities in Brazil, including Araguaína and Goiânia, have begun administering the 20-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (Pneumo 20) to elderly citizens aged 85 and older. This expansion follows a directive from the Ministry of Health to incorporate the vaccine into the Unified Health System (SUS).
The vaccine is designed to protect against 20 serotypes of the Streptococcus pneumoniae bacterium, which can cause severe illnesses such as pneumonia, meningitis, and bloodstream infections. Health officials noted that the elderly are particularly vulnerable due to aging immune systems and existing comorbidities. In Araguaína, the vaccination is being offered at Basic Health Units, with home visits available for patients under home care services.
Additionally, elderly individuals between 60 and 84 who are bedridden, institutionalized, or have specific clinical conditions may also receive the vaccine following medical evaluation. The initiative aims to reduce hospitalization rates and mortality associated with pneumococcal diseases.
