Brazil expands Pneumo 20 vaccine access to seniors aged 85+
The Brazilian Ministry of Health has expanded the availability of the Pneumo 20 vaccine through the Unified Health System (SUS). While the vaccine has been part of the National Vaccination Calendar for children under five since June, it is now being offered to adults aged 85 and older.
This expansion targets an estimated 2.3 million people, with a goal of reaching a 90% vaccination rate. The Pneumo 20 vaccine protects against 20 serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae, the primary cause of respiratory infections such as pneumonia and meningitis. The initiative aims to reduce hospitalizations and mortality rates among the elderly, who are particularly vulnerable due to immunosenescence and existing comorbidities.
The vaccination schedule for seniors depends on their previous immunization history. Those who have never received a pneumococcal vaccine are eligible for a single dose. Individuals who previously received Pneumo 13 or 15 may require a dose after a two-month interval, while those who received Pneumo 23 may need to wait one year. The vaccine is being distributed gradually across the country to all health units.
