Brazil expands public cancer treatment capacity with new accelerator and chemotherapy partnership

A new linear accelerator was delivered to Hospital Santa Marcelina in the Itaquera district of São Paulo under the federal "Agora Tem Especialistas" programme. The equipment, announced by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Health Minister Alexandre Padilha, will increase radiotherapy capacity for roughly 2,200 patients a year and enhance the SUS oncology network.

In the northern state of Pará, the Beneficente Portuguesa hospital signed a partnership with the Instituto de Assistência dos Servidores do Estado do Pará (IASEP). The agreement accredits the hospital’s chemotherapy service, extending specialized cancer care to public servants and their dependents and underscoring a push for a broader, more humanised oncology network in Brazil.
