Brazil expands public science outreach with CNPEM open labs and UFPE new museum
On May 29‑30 the National Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) in Campinas held the "Ciência Aberta" open‑science event, inviting thousands of visitors to interactive demonstrations from the National Laboratories of Biociences (LNBio) and Biorenewables (LNBR). Exhibits showcased magnetic‑resonance imaging, protein crystallisation, fluorescent molecules and hands‑on activities including a protein‑design simulation linked to COVID‑19.
In May the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) inaugurated the +C Museum of Exact Sciences within its Center for Exact Sciences and Nature. The museum features a planetarium, interactive experiment stations and a "laboratory of open doors" that lets visitors observe researchers at work. Director João Gondim said the goal is to demystify science and inspire future scientists.
