Brazil expands self‑reading options for electricity and water meters

Energisa Minas Rio reported more than 15,000 self‑readings of electricity meters in the first months of 2026, a rise of about 20% compared with the same period a year earlier. The service lets customers submit the reading shown on their meter through the Energisa app, WhatsApp, or website, preventing the use of estimated consumption that can inflate bills. It is especially useful for rural users and for urban customers whose meters are behind locked gates or in vacant properties.

In the Federal District, residents with water meters in hard‑to‑access locations can also use a self‑reading system offered by the local water company. By registering online, users enter the meter numbers before the scheduled reading date, helping avoid fines and detect leaks early. The program requires periodic on‑site inspections and may suspend the service if readings are missed for two consecutive months or access is denied during mandatory visits.
