Brazil expands support for family farming and school meal programs

The government of Paraíba has expanded ICMS tax exemptions for food products intended for school meals within state and municipal public school networks. According to Decree No. 48.605, the measure applies to products supplied by family farmers, rural family entrepreneurs, or their organizations, provided they meet specific legal requirements. This benefit is linked to operations under the Food Acquisition Program (PAA) destined for the National School Feeding Program (PNAE).

In a broader national context, the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies held a solemn session to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Family Farming Law. This legislation established the guidelines for the National Policy for Family Farming and Rural Family Enterprises, facilitating public credit programs and food procurement. The sector remains a vital economic driver, encompassing diverse activities such as coffee cultivation, dairy farming, and the production of staple crops like corn, beans, and cassava, which contribute to national food security.
