Brazil expands SUS healthcare access through private partnerships and medication programs

Brazil is implementing several initiatives to expand healthcare access and reduce waiting times within the Unified Health System (SUS). Through the 'Agora Tem Especialistas' program, the Ministry of Health has established contracts with private and philanthropic hospitals across 21 states to perform over 600,000 free procedures, including exams, consultations, and surgeries. In Rio Grande do Norte, approximately 8,200 procedures are planned with an investment of over R$ 26 million, targeting municipalities such as Natal and Mossoró.

Additionally, the federal Farmácia Popular program has expanded its reach. In 2026, the list of medications provided entirely free of charge increased from 39 to 41 items, notably including Dapagliflozin for type 2 diabetes and geriatric diapers for seniors. The program has seen significant growth in specific regions; for instance, in Acre, the number of beneficiaries reached 15,800 by July 2026, a substantial increase from previous years.

On a local level, the 'Giro da Saúde' initiative in Porto Velho has provided specialized medical care to over 1,000 patients across three editions. The program offers various specialties, including cardiology, orthopedics, and pediatrics, to help reduce the municipal regulation queue.
