Brazil expands Youth and Adult Education in 15 towns and a Natal home

The ALFA‑EJA Brazil project, run by the Instituto de Educação e Direitos Humanos Paulo Freire with Petrobras, organized 157 reading and writing workshops between March and July across 15 municipalities in Brazil’s North and Northeast regions. The initiative reached 1,216 students enrolled in Education for Youth and Adults (EJA) and recorded 789 regular participants, with a profiling survey completed by 631 respondents. Workshops were held in Coari (AM) and other cities such as Oiapoque (AP), Carauari (AM), Belém (PA), Fortaleza, Caucaia and Icapuí (CE), Alto do Rodrigues (RN), and locations in Bahia, Sergipe and Pernambuco.

In Natal, the municipal education department signed a four‑year cooperation agreement with the Associação Espírita Enviados de Jesus to provide EJA classes inside the Lar da Vovozinha senior shelter. The arrangement allows elderly residents to start or resume basic education without leaving the facility, aiming to improve access, permanence and continuity of studies for vulnerable seniors.
