Lula plans ministerial changes and Supreme Court appointments

Following his reelection to a fourth term, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is preparing to restructure his ministerial team and address vacancies in the Supreme Federal Court (STF). The president aims to increase the participation of centrist parties in his administration while demanding greater political loyalty from allies to ensure support for strategic government votes in Congress.

Regarding the STF, Lula faces internal debate over potential nominees to fill the vacancy left by Luís Roberto Barroso. One faction of allies advocates for the reappointment of Attorney General Jorge Messias, despite his previous rejection by the Senate. Another group suggests Rodrigo Pacheco, current President of the Court of Accounts of the Union (TCU), as a candidate to improve relations with the legislature.

Simultaneously, social movements and civil society organizations are pressuring the president to prioritize gender and racial representation. They have proposed the name of Lívia Sant’Anna Vaz, a prosecutor from Bahia known for her work against racism, as a candidate for the high court. Other names under consideration include Simone Tebet and Karen Luise Vilanova Batista de Souza.
