Brazil women's safety: Violence and data fragmentation hinder prevention

A recent survey reveals that 78% of Brazilian women have experienced at least one form of violence, leading 98% of them to adopt safety strategies that limit their choices in mobility, work, and leisure. The data highlights a profound sense of insecurity, with 94% of women reporting feeling unsafe in daily life.

At the 20th Brazilian Public Security Forum, experts warned that institutional fragmentation is a critical barrier to preventing feminicide. Prosecutor Silvia Chakian noted that the lack of integrated data between institutions prevents the state from identifying the escalating trajectory of violence. Experts, including delegate Julio Guebert, emphasized the urgent need for a unified network connecting police, the Public Ministry, health services, and education to prevent avoidable deaths.

Additionally, research indicates a crisis of confidence in the criminal justice system. Approximately 67% of Brazilians believe criminal punishments are lighter than those stipulated by the courts, contributing to a widespread perception of impunity.
