Brazil explores edge AI and digital twins to boost urban social inclusion

Brazilian city officials are evaluating the pairing of edge artificial intelligence (AI) with digital‑twin technology as a way to make urban services more inclusive. Edge AI processes sensor data—such as air quality, energy use and traffic flow—directly at the source, eliminating the need to transmit all information to distant data centers and delivering near‑instantaneous insights. Those insights can then feed continuously updated digital replicas of city infrastructure, allowing planners to run real‑time simulations, test scenarios and identify service gaps before they occur.

The combined approach aims to reduce latency, improve public‑safety responses, and highlight areas lacking accessibility or essential services. Successful implementation will require extensive sensor networks, reliable edge‑computing hardware and coordinated public‑private partnerships to fund and govern the projects. Advocates argue that the technology could help municipalities allocate resources more efficiently and enhance overall quality of life for residents.
