Brazil extends driver's license validity for specific 2026 periods

The National Traffic Council (Contran) has authorized an automatic extension for driver's licenses (CNH) in Brazil. Drivers with licenses that expired or will expire between June 5 and September 8, 2026, will have their validity automatically extended until September 9, 2026. This measure applies nationwide and does not require drivers to visit Detran or request new documentation. Depending on specific regulations, some licenses may be eligible for regularization until October 9, 2026.

Separately, motorists are advised that irregularities in their CPF (Individual Taxpayer Registry) can obstruct the CNH renewal process. While a CPF issue does not automatically suspend a currently valid license, it can prevent the issuance of new physical or digital documents, category changes, or second copies. Traffic departments increasingly cross-reference data with the Federal Revenue Service, meaning a status of ‘suspended’ or ‘pending regularization’ will block renewal services until the tax status is corrected.
