Brazil faces business succession opportunities amid aging population

Brazil is experiencing a unique window of opportunity for business sales driven by a convergence of demographic shifts and returning foreign capital. A silent succession crisis is bringing healthy, profitable companies to the market, often due to a lack of successors rather than financial distress.

Demographic data from IBGE shows the proportion of Brazilians aged 65 or older rose from 7.4% in 2010 to 10.9% in 2022. This silver tsunami is impacting corporate ownership, as many founders who built businesses during the economic volatility of the 1970s through 1990s are reaching the end of their active cycles.

According to Sebrae, Brazil ended 2024 with 4.3 million entrepreneurs aged 60 or older, representing 14.3% of the total. Furthermore, the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor indicates that nearly one in five established businesses is led by individuals between 55 and 64 years old.
