Brazil faces heat wave and dry weather due to veranico phenomenon

A weather phenomenon known as a ‘veranico’ is causing temperatures across much of Brazil to rise significantly above the August average. Driven by a high-pressure system, the phenomenon is expected to persist until at least August 19 or 20.

In the state of São Paulo, the Civil Defense has issued an alert for a heat wave characterized by high temperatures and low relative humidity. Interior regions, including Palmital, Bauru, and Campinas, may see temperatures up to 7°C above the seasonal average, with some areas potentially reaching 39°C. The combination of heat, moderate winds, and dry vegetation has increased the risk of wildfires.

While much of the country faces dry and hot conditions, the South remains an exception. Regions in Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul are expected to experience instability, including isolated thunderstorms and rain. In these southern areas, humidity levels remain higher compared to the dry conditions affecting the Southeast and Central regions.
