Brazil weather: Cyclone and cold front bring wind and rain
Brazil is facing extreme weather fluctuations, characterized by both intense heatwaves and the arrival of a cold front associated with an extratropical cyclone. An extratropical cyclone is currently forming between Uruguay and Rio Grande do Sul, with a central pressure estimated between 1000 hPa and 1005 hPa. This system is expected to bring heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds to southern Brazil.
In the Southeast, the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) has issued orange and yellow alerts for windstorms in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Wind gusts could reach between 60 and 100 km/h, posing risks of falling trees, roof damage, and power outages. In São Paulo, a cold front is expected to cause a significant temperature drop, with minimums potentially reaching 10°C in some interior regions.
Simultaneously, parts of the country continue to experience severe heatwaves, with temperatures reaching up to 5°C above average, a phenomenon attributed in part to El Niño. These high temperatures, combined with low humidity in several regions, have prompted health warnings regarding dehydration and heat exhaustion.
