Sub-Saharan Africa economic growth projected at 4.5% by IMF

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) projects that Sub-Saharan African economies will grow by 4.5% in both 2026 and 2027. While the region shows resilience against global shocks, the IMF notes significant disparities between resource-rich and resource-poor nations.

Specific national outlooks include Ethiopia, which is expected to maintain a robust 9.2% growth rate in 2026, and Benin, which is projected to see growth of 7% in 2026 and 6.8% in 2027. In contrast, Mozambique is forecasted to grow 1.6% in 2027, an increase from 0.6% this year. Angola is also seeing improvements, with its current account surplus projected to rise from 1.6% of GDP in 2025 to 4.4% in 2026.

Despite these growth prospects, the region faces risks including energy supply disruptions, extreme weather events like El Niño, and a sharp decline in development assistance, which fell in 2025 and is expected to decrease by another 12% this year.
