Brazil faces religious intolerance and political tension

Brazil faces ongoing challenges regarding religious intolerance and the intersection of faith and politics. Under the 1988 Constitution and Law 11.635 (2007), the free exercise of faith is guaranteed, and religious intolerance is classified as a crime.

Recent incidents of religious intolerance have been reported, including acts of vandalism against images of the Patroness of Brazil in Cuiabá and Jaurú. The Supreme Federal Court (STF) is investigating several other cases of intolerance across various Brazilian states.

The tension between different religious groups is also evident in the political sphere. Debates have emerged regarding the role of Catholicism and the status of Our Lady of Aparecida as the nation's patroness, particularly amidst friction between Catholic traditions and certain neo-Pentecostal perspectives.
