Brazil faces surge in cyberattacks and identity fraud

Brazil is facing a significant surge in digital threats and identity fraud. According to Fortinet, the country recorded 753.8 billion cyberattack attempts in 2025, with malware distribution activities increasing by 535% compared to 2024. Brazil was identified as the most attacked nation in Latin America and ranked among the top ten globally for ransomware victims.

Data from Serasa Experian highlights a sharp rise in identity fraud during the first half of 2026, with nearly 3 million attempts identified during customer onboarding processes. This volume represents a fraud attempt every 5.5 seconds. The telecommunications sector faces a particularly high risk, with an onboarding fraud rate of 3.56%, significantly higher than the national average.

Criminals are increasingly utilizing artificial intelligence to automate and scale fraud, including the alteration of documents, photos, and biometric data. While these technological advancements pose greater risks, multi-layered security tools and biometric validations have helped prevent billions of reais in potential losses.
