Financial fraud and cybercrime impact consumers and industries in Brazil
Financial fraud and cybercrime are significantly impacting both individual consumers and the corporate sector in Brazil. A study by CNDL, SPC Brasil, and Offerwise reveals that 31% of consumers fell victim to financial fraud in the last 12 months, affecting approximately 11.6 million people in Brazilian capitals. While 63% of victims managed to recover some funds, 28% received no reimbursement at all.
In the corporate landscape, a Fiesp survey indicates that one in five industrial companies in São Paulo fell victim to digital fraud, including Pix scams and data theft, within the last year. These crimes impact business continuity and competitiveness, with 75.9% of victim companies reporting losses of up to 1% of their annual revenue.
In the e-commerce sector, Serasa Experian reported that over 111,000 fraudulent online purchase attempts were prevented during August, totaling R$ 97.4 million in avoided losses. The average ticket for these fraudulent attempts was R$ 863.49, significantly higher than the R$ 523.83 average for legitimate purchases.
