Brazil Federal Revenue issues R$ 41 billion in income tax refunds

The Brazilian Federal Revenue announced that income tax refunds for 2026 have reached a historic total of over R$ 41 billion, benefiting nearly 26 million citizens. According to official data, 80% of these refunds were credited within 30 days of the filing deadline. Additionally, an IRPF cashback system distributed R$ 460 million to 3.4 million individuals who had not filed declarations in the previous year.

To assist taxpayers, the agency has expanded educational measures to help resolve pending issues before formal tax audits begin. Through the 'Projeto Cartas', approximately 500,000 taxpayers were notified via mail to rectify simple errors that were holding up their refunds. The agency clarified that these notifications are intended for voluntary correction and do not constitute formal tax assessments or penalties.

Furthermore, a residual refund batch for 184,442 taxpayers, totaling R$ 531.6 million, is scheduled for consultation on October 23, 2026, with payments expected on October 30. This batch primarily targets individuals who resolved issues related to the 'malha fina' (tax audit), late filers, or those with residual amounts from previous years.
