Brazil fertilizer market shows divergent trends in urea and phosphate prices
The Brazilian fertilizer market has shown divergent trends through August. Urea and ammonium sulfate prices have seen increases, with urea gaining approximately US$ 80 to US$ 90 per ton in July, reaching levels between US$ 480 and US$ 500 per ton in the Brazilian market. This rise is attributed to demand from India and supply constraints in the Middle East.
However, nitrogenous fertilizer imports to Brazil have declined significantly. Between January and August, urea imports fell by 25% compared to the same period in the previous year, while ammonium nitrate imports dropped by 33%. Analysts suggest that while current exchange rates and prices favor buyers, Brazil may need to accelerate purchases to replenish stocks for upcoming crops, particularly corn, which is an intensive user of nitrogenous inputs.
Market volatility remains a factor. While urea prices rose due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, a new export quota from China could lead to a short-term price correction. The ultimate impact will depend on the volume of urea exported by China and the results of Indian procurement.
