Brazil Finance Ministry denies capital controls and minimum wage decoupling

Brazil's Finance Minister, Dario Durigan, has denied rumors that the government is considering capital controls or decoupling the minimum wage from other economic indicators. Speaking on August 6, 2026, Durigan addressed market uncertainty, noting that investor hesitation is linked to the future trajectory of public accounts and the upcoming presidential mandate rather than a lack of fiscal commitment.

Durigan emphasized that fiscal responsibility remains a cornerstone of economic policy, citing recent measures such as meeting fiscal targets and the blocking of R$ 17 billion. He stated that the government is not currently discussing the decoupling of the minimum wage and suggested that major economic definitions will be addressed following the electoral period. The minister attributed current market volatility to both domestic debt sustainability concerns and international instability, including high interest rates and global conflicts.
