Brazil focuses on energy efficiency and bioenergy for decarbonization
Brazil is addressing energy consumption challenges through improved building efficiency and the expansion of bioenergy. While 88.2% of the country's electricity capacity comes from renewable sources, commercial, public, and residential buildings consume approximately 50% of the total electricity generated. Within these structures, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems can account for up to 40% of an industrial or commercial building's energy bill, representing a significant area for potential efficiency gains.
In the biofuels sector, Brazil remains the world's second-largest ethanol producer, with 33 billion liters produced during the 2023/2024 harvest. Sugarcane derivatives serve as the country's second-largest internal energy source at 15.8%, trailing only petroleum and derivatives. To further decarbonization, the government has implemented Decree No. 13.094/2026, which regulates the National Sustainable Aviation Fuel Program (ProBioQAV). This initiative, part of the Future Fuel Law, establishes a framework for the certification and monitoring of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in alignment with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.
