Brazil greenhouse gas emissions fall by 6% in 2025

Greenhouse gas emissions in Brazil decreased by 6% in 2025, according to data from the Climate Observatory. This marks the third consecutive year of decline, following reductions of 12% in 2023 and 13% in 2024. The drop was primarily driven by a reduction in deforestation.

Total gross emissions reached just over 2 billion tons of CO2 equivalent, down from approximately 2.2 billion tons in 2024. Land-use change remains the largest source of emissions, accounting for 39% of the total, largely due to deforestation. Agriculture follows at 30%, while the energy sector contributes 21%.

With these results, Brazil is nearing its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target under the Paris Agreement, which aims to reduce emissions by 37% in 2025 compared to 2005 levels. The country is currently within 85 million tons of meeting this established climate goal.
