Brazil health experts link lifestyle habits to mental health and aging
Health experts in Brazil are highlighting the long-term impacts of lifestyle choices on mental health and aging. Frequent or excessive alcohol consumption is linked to increased depressive symptoms, anxiety, and insomnia. According to Ministry of Health Vigitel 2025 data, 20.4% of adults reported consuming at least six alcoholic drinks in a single occasion, an increase from 15.6% in 2006.
Psychologists note that early alcohol use in adolescents can impair the developing central nervous system, affecting decision-making and emotional regulation. This risk is part of the 'Yellow September' campaign focused on suicide prevention and mental health awareness.
Simultaneously, as Brazil's life expectancy reaches 76.6 years, specialists emphasize that healthy aging requires prevention during youth. Maintaining balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, and sleep quality are critical to preserving autonomy and preventing chronic conditions such as hypertension, which was reported by 29.7% of adults in Brazilian capitals in 2024.
