Brazil Health Minister warns climate change is a public health crisis

Brazil's Minister of Health, Alexandre Padilha, has identified climate change as a critical public health crisis both in Brazil and globally. During a press conference, Padilha emphasized the urgent need for healthcare systems to adapt to these environmental shifts.

Citing World Health Organization (WHO) projections, Padilha noted that one in four deaths globally is expected to be linked to climate change in some capacity. He highlighted how rising average temperatures facilitate the expansion of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the vector for dengue, into new regions such as Southern Brazil. He also noted that extreme heat waves contribute to an increase in chronic conditions, including cardiovascular diseases.

Regarding preparedness following the devastating 2024 floods in Rio Grande do Sul, the Minister stated that the country is currently better prepared, though he maintained that constant vigilance is necessary across all regions. Additionally, Ministry officials warned of a potentially historic El Niño event, with intense effects expected to impact Brazil through at least March 2027.
