Brazil Health Ministry Forms Task Force to Overhaul Unicamp ER and Proposes Permanent Public Health Emergency Center

During a visit to Campinas, Health Minister Alexandre Padilha announced the creation of an integrated working group, composed of the Ministry of Health, the Hospital de Clínicas (HC) of Unicamp and the Campinas municipal government, to redesign the urgent and emergency care area of the HC. The aim is to reduce pressure on the hospital’s emergency department and to explore alternatives for better patient flow. Padilha also referenced a proposed oncology hospital that remains under review.

Separately, Brazil is moving to establish the Brazilian Center for Public Health Emergencies (CBESP) by the end of the year. The center will be governed by Fiocruz and will unite ministries, state and municipal health agencies, universities and civil society to anticipate, prevent and respond to epidemics, outbreaks and health‑related disasters. Funding is expected from the federal budget, with possible international contributions, and the center will implement the National Policy for Public Health Emergencies.

Both initiatives aim to strengthen Brazil’s health system and improve its capacity to handle emergencies and specialist care.
